Penang recently hosted the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers, uniting conservationists and industry experts from 20 countries to advance butterfly conservation and showcase Penang’s eco-tourism initiatives
Event brief
The Malaysian city of Penang recently hosted the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES).
Held over four days, the event attracted 76 participants from 20 countries. This was the third time Penang had the honour of hosting ICBES, following successful conferences in 2000 and 2009.
Penang State’s executive councillor for tourism and creative economy, Wong Hon Wai, shared: “ICBES 2024 is a significant event for Penang, showcasing our state’s commitment to biodiversity and conservation.”
Wong, who delivered a keynote address at the conference opening, also pointed out that hosting international conservation-focused events such as ICBES will also indirectly raise global awareness about Penang’s ecosystems and position the state as a leader in eco-conscious tourism.
Event highlights
Delegates gathered at Ascott Gurney Penang for the first three days of the conference, while the final day of the conference took place at Entopia, Penang’s renowned butterfly sanctuary.
The conference provided a platform for enthusiasts, conservationists, exhibitors and butterfly suppliers to share their passion for butterfly conservation. It also explored new advancements and the latest techniques in habitat preservation, sustainable breeding practices, and public education strategies.
Experts and exhibitors from around the world presented case studies on established butterfly exhibitions, butterfly farming issues, and international logistics issues on butterfly pupa importation and exportation.
The opening dinner, at Hin Bus Depot, showcased a vibrant mix of local Penang cuisine and creative, and nature-inspired decor, immersing attendees in Penang’s cultural heritage and biodiversity. This allow delegates to connect over shared conservation goals and celebrate the kickoff of the conference in an inspiring and relaxed setting.
The conference programme was also an opportunity for delegates to explore Penang, such as the George Town Heritage Walking Tour, a visit to the scenic Penang Hill, and a hike at Penang National Park.
Local host, Entopia, also organised a 3D2N post-conference tour to Taman Negara Sungai Relau, part of the expansive Taman Negara national park in Pahang. The park’s lush landscapes are home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, and hornbills.
Joseph Goh, CEO of Entopia, said: “We included a visit to the park in the programme as we wanted delegates to experience Malaysia’s rainforest and natural beauty, while providing an enriching end to the conference.”
Challenges
The conference is typically scheduled in November, as this is considered the low season for butterfly exhibitors globally, making it easier for them to travel and attend international conferences. However, November also marks the rainy season in Peninsular Malaysia, including Penang, which brings certain challenges.
Goh recalled that the unpredictable weather was a major concern, particularly for outdoor events intended to highlight Penang’s rich historical and natural attractions. Activities like the heritage walk, excursions to Penang Hill and Penang National Park, and the post-conference tour to Taman Negara Sungai Relau were all at risk of being affected by rain.
To mitigate these risks, the Entopia organising team accounted for the rainy season in their planning process. They developed a contingency plan that involved scaling back or replacing outdoor activities with indoor alternatives if necessary. Despite some rain during the conference, the weather cooperated for the main outdoor events, allowing the programme to proceed according to plan.
Collaboration with key industry stakeholders was essential to the conference’s success, where planning began a year in advance. The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau played a pivotal role by hosting the welcome dinner, promoting the event, and handling the conference’s photography and videography needs.
